I took a first aid course a really long time ago, so this might be inaccurate. When you get stabbed you must make sure that the foreign object does not move, as it could easily puncture an artery or blood vessel. I assume the transportation to the hospital was not very quick, so they had to make sure it wouldn't move, thus tying it so his wrist.

It looks like the wooden part would be much heavier than the blade.
