A 24-year old from Belfast in Mpumalanga was beaten to death by a group last Friday in what appears to be mob justice.
Pierre Etienne de Necker was declared braindead soon after his arrival on Friday (July 8) evening at the Belfast Hospital, however, he was declared dead just after 3pm on Saturday (July 9) in hospital, reported the Middelburg Observer.
His father, Leon de Necker requested that the photograph of his son’s bloodied body be published, so that people could see how Pierre was beaten to death “like a dog and left to die like a dog in the street”.
Leon expressed how heartbroken he was and that he was still not sure of what exactly happened.
According to information received by Leon on Friday, Pierre and his friend drove to a Shell petrol station in a white Volkswagen Golf; a fight broke out at the station between Pierre and a group of black people. One of the men had a gun and Pierre tried to escape the encounter.
Four cars, including a taxi, gave chase and apparently cornered him in a dead-end street in Extension 2.
People who wanted to remain anonymous confirmed that there had been a riot in the street. Witnesses later allegedly heard how the people at the scene shouted: “You dog! You dog!” Eyewitnesses alleged that they approached when a police car arrived on the scene, but they alleged that the officers stood with their hands in their pockets and merely watched the attack taking place.
The Middelburg Observer is still awaiting comment from the police on this allegation.
The group of men and women on the scene apparently alleged that Pierre had stolen a vehicle and that they were going to teach him a lesson.
There were about eight vehicles at the scene, including two Volkswagen Golfs, a BMW and a Mercedes ML. Six women, who had arrived in the Golf on the scene, allegedly incited the men to continue their assault of Pierre. Aside from being hit by stones, it is believed Pierre was repeatedly struck on the head with a broomstick.
One of Pierre’s attackers took a bloody picture of him during the assault and published it via WhatsApp. The image circulated and apparently came to his family’s attention.
Pierre was left lying on the ground and eyewitnesses confirmed that there was a gun lying next to him that later disappeared.
Leon said his son never owned a gun. He went on to say that he heard that the people in the vehicles who tried to stop his son’s vehicle were armed and that was why Pierre had tried to drive away.
Shocked witnesses said that, aside from the police, who allegedly did nothing to stop the assault, the ambulance didn’t offer much help either.
“They did nothing for him; it took them time to put him on a stretcher. The ambulance was probably 20 minutes late before leaving with him,” claimed one of the witnesses.
A reliable source said that gang justice “works” for the community because the public no longer trusts the police.
According to Maroela Media, police spokesperson Sergeant Kwapa Macdonald confirmed that the Belfast police were investigating a case of murder.
“The attack allegedly links to a car that was stolen in town a few weeks ago. Members of the community have seen the stolen car at the petrol station. Then the justice group took the law into their own hands and assaulted the driver,” Macdonald said.
CCTV footage has emerged that could be linked to Pierre’s murder.
