Dismembered Body of Missing German Businessman Found in Freezer of a Home in TH

BANGKOK: The dismembered body of a 62-year-old German businessman who has been missing for a week has been found in the freezer of a house in southern Thailand, police said on Tuesday (Jul 11).

Chief of police in the town of Nong Prue Tawee Kudthalaeng said the body of Hans-Peter Mack was found at about 11pm on Monday.

Investigators were able to locate the body by using security camera footage from the area to track it, Tawee said.

He did not elaborate, but photos and video from the camera published by Thai media showed the white freezer in the bed of a black truck on the road with a man squatting next to it.

Mack was last seen driving in his Mercedes sedan in Pattaya, a coastal city in southern Thailand, according to a missing person announcement distributed by his family that offered a 3 million baht (US$86,000) reward for information leading to his return.

The telephone number listed on the poster for tips went unanswered on Tuesday.

Mack lived in Pattaya with his Thai wife, and worked as a real estate broker, according to local media reports. He had been a resident of Thailand for at least several years.

His Mercedes E350 sedan was found on Sunday in the parking lot of a condominium in Nong Prue, an upscale settlement popular with foreigners northeast of Pattaya, in the province of Chonburi.

According to police, there were traces of what appeared to be a cleaning solvent on the seats, dashboard, steering wheel and other areas of the car.

Tawee said police had determined a large amount of money was missing from Mack's bank account, which they believe is linked to the crime. He refused to elaborate but said they are looking into several suspects, both German nationals and Thai.

The German Embassy in Bangkok did not answer its telephone or respond to an e-mail query seeking comment about the case.

Lawyer’s Assistant to Prime Murder Suspect Claims Hans Peter Mack May Have Had Heart Attack and Suspect’s Panicked.

On Wednesday (July 12th) a man identified only as Mr. Matthew, who is an interpreter and lawyer’s assistant to Mr. Olaf Brinkmann , the alleged ringleader and prime suspect, told Thai media “Mr. Olaf has continued to refuse to talk with police. After I talked with Olaf, however, I believe the whole situation might have been accidental.”

“No one intended to kill Mr. Hans. When a discussion between the two parties escalated and involved money and pressure to pay, Mr. Hans might have suffered from heart failure and had a sudden heart attack. At this point, the suspects panicked and did not know what to do, deciding to hide the body versus inform police due to being afraid of repercussions. However, we (Lawyers and translators for Olaf Brinkmann) are still not sure of the exact sequence of events and do not know how much money was involved and what the money was for. This will be explored further.” The lawyer’s assistant told Thai media.

“Mr. Olaf also wants to meet with the other prime captured suspects and discuss the situation with them, especially around what he feels is possible incorrect information given to police by Mr. Shahruek Kareem Udin, 27, Pakistani/Thai.” The legal assistant and translator concluded.

TPN media notes that it is highly unlikely Thai police will allow the suspects to meet and talk with each other and have kept them fully apart while being interviewed.

TPN Media also notes that the translator’s statements were not a legal confession or statement from Mr. Brinkmann who officially has yet to speak.

Thai law enforcement officers have arrested two suspects in the gruesome murder of German real estate broker Hans Peter Mack so far, while still chasing the third Pakistani suspect.
UPDATE: A Pakistani – Thai man who was the last remaining free prime suspect in the gruesome murder of German real estate broker Hans Peter Mack was arrested in Kanchanaburi.
A team from the Region 2 Police led by Major General Teerachai Chamnanmor arrested the last suspect, Mr. Sahruk Kareem Uddin, 27, a Pakistani national with Thai citizenship.

He was arrested while he was getting off a taxi in Kanchanaburi City before reportedly planning on heading to Myanmar on Wednesday (July 12th). He is as of press time being taken back to the Nongprue Police Station which will take about five hours.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, July 11th, the Thai police arrested Mr. Olaf Thorsten Brinkmann, a 52-year-old German national, who was also one of the prime suspects and who police allege was the ringleader of the crime.

On Wednesday (July 12th), the Nongprue Police attempted once again to question Olaf. He continues to deny all charges and says he is not ready to say anything unless he has a lawyer of his choice present.
