Re: Death By Supine Hypotension
It may occur especially during the third trimester of pregnancy, it's the pregnant uterus weight which compresses the abdominal aorta and the inferior vena cava (which run almost parallel): even sitting can be dangerous in some cases, hardly it's fatal but definitely it can be can be life-threatening as she can switch from unconsciousness to death in a short lapse of time: changing position to her side would have likely restored the normal blood circulation hence saved her life (IF that's really the cause, impossible to say before the autopsy), unless the cause was pathological, like some invasion/obstruction/trombosys of inferior vena cava (in that case, even rolling her on the ground wouldn't help). Almost all pregnant women at their last three monts experience this at an inferior level, but often it's symptomless so they don't even notice it. A good way to prevent it is to put some small pillow under her right hip, in order to slightly keep her body tilted, but in case of shock the best thing to do is to call 911 (or any emergency number) and in the meantime try to keep her legs above the level of her head, which helps the return of blood to her heart. |
