Death of a Marine: The AP Photo of Joshua Bernard, Helmand 2009
A rocket-propelled grenade struck Lance Corporal Joshua M. Bernard, 21, of New Portland, Maine, during a Taliban ambush in Dahaneh, Helmand province, Afghanistan, on August 14, 2009. He was taken to a field hospital and died there the same day. Julie Jacobson, a photographer embedded with his patrol, recorded fellow Marines trying to help him. The picture was distributed on September 4, 2009, despite opposition from Bernard's father and Defense Secretary Robert Gates. Its release prompted a national dispute over whether images of dying soldiers should be published. It later won a World Press Photo award. |
