Los Lunas police have released the photo of a man they say was severely burned after he attempted to steal live copper cables.

The photo of 48-year-old Dennis Vega’s badly burned torso and face is shocking in more ways than one and police are hoping criminals take notice.

Police say Vega broke into the pump house of a Los Lunas cabinet company that recently went out of business. They say he was cutting the live copper cables when he was shocked and thrown across the building.

Rescue crews who arrived on the scene say minutes after the incident the force was still so strong it blew out a second generator.

Police say Vega somehow made it to the Wal-Mart down the street to ask for help. They say the car Vega was driving even had burnt skin stuck to the seats.

Los Lunas Police Chief Roy Melnick says Vega was unemployed so he likely doesn’t have medical insurance, which means the public will be paying his medical bills.
