This was Ben Tre during the Tet Offensive. The girl's death (along with 85% of the town and its population) was courtesy of U.S. Air Force Major Chester L. Brown, who directed American air and artillery fire for hours on end. Rationalizing the overkill, and the fact that the Viet Cong were no longer in the area, he was the one who said, "It became necessary to destroy the town in order to save it."
