About 8,000 Peshmerga troops began an advance from Zummar toward Sinjar in northern Iraq on December 17, 2014. Kurdish officials estimated by December 19 that more than 100 militants had been killed, while an initially published total of 120 deaths within six hours is not corroborated by any reporting.

Sites containing mass graves of Yazidi victims near Sinjar, including Solagh, were discovered only when the town was recaptured in November 2015, eleven months later. Human rights groups criticised Kurdish forces for the practice of recording and publicly exhibiting the bodies of their enemies.
