Did they have cameras that could be used outdoors. The pic is clear and of good quality. How did they do that??
Back in the 1860's photographers were using "wet plates" which required them to setup a darkroom on location, either a tent or trailer, to process the film immediately. Cameras were quite large and had to be on tripods and exposures were long.
