Ironic that you should say: "Jesus, not East Timor . . ." East Timor is a largely Christian enclave in a Muslim nation, Indonesia. Being treated in a not exactly kind manor by the central government they tried to break away as in independent state. The Indonesian government, with American encouragement and support (the need to maintain a stable and united Indonesia being deemed paramount) crushed the rebellion in a rather messy and gory manner. Some have called for the indictment of Kissinger as a war criminal in the affair, but that isn't news as he has been implicated in quite a lot of such business (e.g. Southeast Asia, Pinochet's Argentina). America has a hard job handling its global responsibilities for maintaining stability and continuity (except where it is better to encourage instability and rebellion). It is inevitable that some mistakes will be made and some innocent blood spilled. Global hegemony is a challenging task.
