An unidentified couple (estimated to be in their early 30s) were found dumped by the road, bound with cables. Both had signs of 'severe torture' (article was not specific) and had been strangled to death using homemade garottes, with wire and a block of wood, the components of which were still around their throats.

Not sure what's up with the censoring on this set. Censoring faces has become more and more common in Mexico, so that isn't unexpected. But both images also censor the female decedent's ass. I suspect she either shit herself during strangulation or her pants have been pulled down or both.

Anyway, Juarez only rarely releases photos anymore anyway, so even censored they're as good as anything I've seen from there in the last decade. Did m'best.

It's usually a string, wire or small rope with a stick used to help tighten it around the victim's neck.

As Kimmie mentioned, it is a mechanical enhancement to augment the strangulation process.

It simplifies the process somewhat for the killer, because the wooden blocks are turned and pulled, rather than his fingers getting shredded up trying to manually tighten a ligature.

It also allows for fairly easy control if you want to torture the victim because you can simply relax the blocks and tighten them again at will, allowing someone to gasp for air a few times before cutting it off again.

Their use has become increasingly more popular in Cartel-related hits the past few years for some reason. Used to be you'd only see strangulations or the ever-popular suffocation with a plastic bag. But lately, garroting with the wooden blocks is quite common, especially among the sicarios in Juarez.

This tool is quite common, and I can even find many cases using this tool in Chinese criminal files. It is quite simple to make, and it seems that humans can make such a tool without a teacher. I have also seen a lot of this kind of tool for sale in the amazon store, but it is usually used as a hand saw.

the only other case that I can recall where the use of a garrote is mentioned, is the Jonbenet Ramsey case. & I didnt know what exactly that was then, either. so thanks.
