The photographer is James Nachtwey (whose book "deeds of war" is a must have for those of you who like this forum). Before anyone asks, I sadly don't know what caused this type of injury. uh, white phos would cause wide spread burns, not localized like to his face. anything that would have burned his face off would have scorched his hair as well.

so, possibly acid face dunk, possibly photo cropped.

I'll go with this not being real.

This image is one of the oldest gore images I can recall seeing on the Internet. I honestly recall seeing this image as early as 2002, maybe even earlier.
