If it was a "contact", as opposed to "close range" shot, it would have caused lots of damage. Sub-sonic handgun rounds will just punch a hole. In a contact shot (most suicides) all the burning gasses go INTO the wound and blow back out explosively. In a close range shot, they just cause the burning you see on the skin. If it were a long range shot, it would just be a hole with a dark rim. Supersonic rifle ammunition can cause lots of damage because of the sonic pressure wave that travels with the bullet.
