The exact same rifle shows up in most of Matthew Brady's photographs, and he wrote later that he would "Dramatize" the photos by adding "props.' As for the turning over, riger is set in a classic "face down" position- the hands are exactly where they would rest if the body was face down.

As for staging the photos, we should not judge Brady too harshly, photography was still pretty new then.

Agreed, Vik and Wolf. I saw that same video, too. And, yes, this dead dude was only pretended to be dead. There's a colorized version too, with ol' Brady himself posing next to the make-believe corpse. I heard the Aliens paid him fairly well for this.
