Civil Registrar Gabriela Ucelo Shot Dead in Dolores, Guatemala, July 2024
On July 18, 2024, Gabriela del Mar Ucelo Moreno, 27, was killed by gunfire while eating at a roadside food stand in the Ixcoxol hamlet of Dolores, Peten. Ucelo Moreno was a civil registrar at Guatemala's national registry RENAP in Dolores and a former San Benito beauty queen. Two men on a motorcycle shot her directly before escaping. She had lodged a complaint about death threats three days earlier, and a copy was found inside her car. Police arrested Dimas Rafael Cente Suchite, identified as the gunman, and Jose Daniel Vasquez Ramos, identified as the motorcycle rider, in November 2024. Prosecutors have raised jealousy by a coworker as a possible motive, though it has not been proven, and the person who ordered the killing remains unidentified.
