Someone I know who claims to have witnessed a similar road fatality said there was a very audible POP when the person's head was crushed. Could this tale possibly be true?

Well, I've seen various animals get run over by big trucks, and they do indeed make a nice popping sound when everything suddenly blows out of them, so I'd assume that the human animal is no different...
