A newspaper says it took three calls to Detroit authorities over two days before they recovered the body of a man frozen in ice in the elevator shaft of a vacant warehouse.

A reporter for The Detroit News got a tip and found the body Tuesday in a former Detroit Public Schools warehouse, the newspaper said Thursday.

The reporter called 911 Tuesday and told a female operator about the body, the newspaper said. It said a man returned the call to the newsroom about 20 minutes later and said the body would be retrieved.

But the next day, the News said the body was still trapped in the ice. The reporter made two more calls to 911, one of which was disconnected, and a fire department employee arranged to meet the reporter and to get the body, the newspaper said.

A message seeking comment was left for Detroit police before business hours Thursday.

Authorities used saws to extricate the body Wednesday afternoon, the Detroit Free Press and WDIV-TV said. Investigators said they think the body was there for several months.

It was taken to the Wayne County medical examiner’s office. The man’s name and the cause of his death weren’t immediately known.

The warehouse once was the Detroit schools’ main storehouse for books and supplies. A 1987 fire caused extensive damage. It also once was part of Detroit’s main post office.

The building is owned by Manuel Maroun, who also owns the nearby vacant Michigan Central Depot, an 17-story train station and office tower built in 1913 and vacant since 1988. He also owns the Ambassador Bridge that links Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.

His name was Johnnie Redding.

The last sad days of the Detroit man found frozen

...The photograph of Johnnie would make its way around the world, along with the details that many knew his cadaver was down there but did little, if anything, about it. City boosters complained it was another case of the media focusing on the bad in a city with many wonderful qualities.
Except that Johnnie was found in a gaping elevator shaft owned by a local billionaire in a city with tens of thousands of abandoned buildings. And still, some of these decaying buildings keep people alive. Almost 20,000 homeless people drift through the streets of Detroit, meaning that one in 47 here is without a bed, according to the Homeless Management Information System, which tracks people who seek services. With too few shelter beds and too little money to help the walking poor, places like the crumbling warehouse where Johnnie was found have become the de facto shelters...

...His autopsy revealed no broken bones, no wounds and no water in his lungs, which means he did not fall into the flooded shaft and drown. Most likely, Johnnie was smoking cocaine with somebody and died, coroners suspect. Johnnie's party pal may have panicked and tossed his body down the water-filled shaft...
