Child Victims of 2006 Kebithigollewa Bus Attack at Anuradhapura Funeral Home
More than 60 people were killed on June 15, 2006, when two Claymore directional mines struck a state-owned bus near Kebithigollewa in north-central Sri Lanka. Children were among the dead. Reported figures for the overall death toll range from 60 to 68. The next day, funeral workers at a funeral home in Anuradhapura prepared child victims for mass burial. Photographer Q. Sakamaki documented the preparations in a series published as "Sri Lankan Conflict." The photograph won first place in the Magazine General News Reporting category of the 64th Pictures of the Year International competition. The Sri Lankan government accused the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam of carrying out the attack, while the organization denied responsibility.  · |
