Caruaru Prison Riot 2016: 6 Inmates Killed at Juiz Placido de Souza, Brazil
At about 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2016, shortly after visiting hours ended, a riot began at Juiz Placido de Souza penitentiary in Caruaru, Pernambuco, Brazil. Prisoners set mattresses alight and used blades against rival inmates, leaving six prisoners dead; local reporting said several victims had been decapitated. Fifteen of the facility's seventeen pavilions sustained partial damage before the state Shock Battalion regained control at about 6 a.m., following some ten hours of negotiations.
