Cartel Shootout with Mexican Army at Pharr-Reynosa Bridge, May 10, 2023

At about half past one in the afternoon on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, Mexican soldiers chasing an armed convoy were fired on by men in a white pickup truck near the Reynosa approach to the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge in Tamaulipas. The soldiers killed the gunmen and seized weapons, ammunition and several vehicles. Truck drivers and motorists waiting at the international crossing sheltered beneath their vehicles and recorded the shooting. Customs traffic was brought to a standstill, while the crossing was closed on the Texas side.

Officials did not identify those killed, referring to them only as armed men who might have cartel links; no cartel was identified on the record. The reported number killed varies from three to four, with both counts attributed to the same police chief. Police and Customs were also conducting a dummy-round training exercise near the US side of the bridge that day, meaning some initial gunfire reports from there concerned the drill. The actual shooting took place entirely on the Mexican side.
