Yes, they are a little, but when faced with a scene like this the first thing a lot of people, including professionals, do is crack a one-liner. It's a coping mechanism that gives the brain time to process the scene. It may sound distasteful and disrespectful but there is usually none intended...

I rather suspect that, in certain parts of Brazil, when someone who may be a prostitute turns up murdered pretty much the first thing the police will do it check to see what genitals the victim has. Other cultures have more open attitudes towards death than we might expect so doing this out in the street there when we would do it in a mortuary may well be utterly normal...
