Cambodia - Woman Hanged Herself
On 27 September 2021 in Kandal province (Cambodia), 33 year old B.K. committed suicide via hanging. She had been depressed due to being in debt + arguments within her family.

We have a lot of laws in the US (and many western/euro countries) that provide significant protections for debtors in terms of what debt collectors can get away with. Those laws do not necessarily exist everywhere and the harassment can be extremely persistent and disruptive, ranging from incessant annoyance to outright terror tactics. It'll wear a person down. Certain cultures also attribute a significant social stigma to debt, far more than we do here in the US with our broad culture of credit. It can bring meaningful and impacting social shame on one's entire family when it becomes known. |
