On September 12 2025, according to a statement by the Arakan Army, the military council conducted an airstrike, dropping two 500-pound bombs into Tharyat Ta Pin Village, Kyauk Taw Township, Arakan State. The bombs hit directly in front of the village’s monastic school compound and educational flower garden.

As a result of the two 500-lb bombs, a total of 18 people — including students of the privately-run high school — were killed on the spot, and more than 20 others were seriously injured, according to initial reports.

The Arakan Army represent the Rakhine people in the country, and seeks to restore the sovereignty of the Rakhines. They were declared a terrorist organization by the Myanmar government in 2020. They stated that the military junta, not only in Arakan but across Myanmar, is losing militarily and has increasingly targeted civilian areas with airstrikes driven by ethnic hatred rather than striking legitimate military targets.
