They sure do. Your chest is like a bell jar. When you inhale, it drops the pressure & allows the lungs to inflate into the empty space you see in the picture.
Also, that's his heart in the middle, still inside the pericardium. Pretty neat stuff.

A 20-year-old man, identified only as Lucas, was arrested after confessing to police that he murdered and dismembered his wife's 34-year-old cousin, Caio, alleging years of harassment against his wife.

Lucas claimed he engaged in a confrontation with Caio after hearing his wife screaming in the living room. He stabbed Caio, before dismembering the body with a knife and a saw. He then scattered the remains across five locations in Amparo - the torso was left in the residence. Expressing remorse, Lucas admitted the crime to relatives before turning himself in.

The suspect said the killing was motivated by long-standing allegations that Caio had harassed and abused his wife, including incidents when she was between 12 and 14 years old, and more recent unwanted messages.
