there are probably two parts to it

1) most people do not show their true selves until they have already hooked their catch . . . by that time, the victim is already invested in the relationship and cannot easily leave

2) in many of these countries (we hear about it frequently in poor muslim countries with acid attacks), sometimes if the girl turns down a guy, then he takes it upon himself to attack her anyway, which just means the inevitable murder takes place even earlier
