On February 21, 1943, 22-year-old Sergeant Boris Aleksandrovich Lazarev of the Soviet 760th Fighter Aviation Regiment was downed while piloting a lend-lease Hawker Hurricane over Karelia. His aircraft came down in a bog roughly 40 km from Loukhi. In 1998, 55 years afterward, the St Petersburg search group Vysota used a crane to recover the plane. Anaerobic, acidic bog water, together with fuel leaking from the engine, had mummified Lazarev. He remained in the cockpit, his hands holding the harness straps. His Red Army book, Komsomol card, letters, service pistol and a knife inscribed by a friend identified him. Accounts attribute the victory to German ace Rudolf Muller of JG 5. Lazarev received a military-honours burial at Chupa in Karelia, and no relatives were ever traced.

On February 21st 1943, two P-40 fighters and five Hurricanes took off from the Soviet military air base in Chupa, to fly a mission. One of the Hurricanes was piloted by sergeant Lazarev, of the 760-th IAP.

At the same time, German pilot Oberfeldwebel Rudolf Muller from 6/JG5 "Expertenstaffel", with his squad of four Bf109G fighters, had just finished escorting five Ju87D bombers, and enc More..ountered the Soviet fighters of the 760-th IAP with his Bf109G-2. Near the area of railway station – Polyarnyi Krug - , he shot down the last plane in his life, before he got the same fate- he was knocked out on April, 19th 1943. Muller's plane has been hit in 8 km to the east of lake Maljarvi, then catched by soviets and sent in POW camp where was killed on October, 21st 1943 when attempting to escape.
The military historian Jury Rybin, has found out the information confirming the fact in an archive, that in that day Muller had hit down two Soviet planes, one of which was piloted by sergeant Boris Aleksandrovich Lazarev.


Most likely after the Hurricane was hit, Lazarev having unfastened his belts, tried to leave the machine falling down, but had lost too much time. Probably, the low height prevented him from jumping. The ' Hurricane ' crashed in a bog. The pilot died from the strong kick of a control panel of the plane. When he died he was only 22 years old.

Boris Aleksandrovich Lazarev is now buried in the cemetry of Chupa, Karelian Republic.
