Bodies Said to Be NKVD Victims Exhumed in and Near Riga, Latvia, July 1941
Exhumations were conducted in and around Riga in July 1941 after Soviet forces withdrew from Latvia. German occupation-era accounts identified the dead as victims of NKVD killings carried out during the withdrawal in late June. Reported exhumation sites included Baltezers, Dreiliņi, Biķernieki and the yard of Riga Central Prison. The decomposed male bodies were laid out for identification, with some bearing tags or numbers. The exact site represented by each photograph is not established, and none of the men in this group has been named. Contemporary captions described the bodies as murder victims being exhumed and identified, but did not establish that the men had been beaten or tortured. |
