Bodies of African Migrants Wash Ashore at Garabulli After Boat Sinks, 2014
On the night of August 22, 2014, a wooden vessel carrying African migrants to Europe went down off Qarabouli, also written Garabulli, around 60 kilometers east of Tripoli, Libya. Without vessels of its own, the Libyan coast guard commandeered fishing boats and saved 16 or 17 survivors, while initially retrieving about 20 bodies. About 150 others were unaccounted for, although a coastguard official later said the death toll might reach 250, a figure never confirmed. In the days that followed, bodies came ashore on the Garabulli beach and were gathered by rescue workers. The migrants came from sub-Saharan Africa, but officials could not provide definite information on their nationalities. |
