Pingpong balls will explode, they are made from cellulose, we used to light them as kids

Maybe it was a pingpong ball factory or storage facility?
I hadn't thought about that, but you're exactly right, ping pong balls do explode given the right conditions. Many many years ago there was a fire and explosion at a storage facility for a sporting goods store that involved ping pong balls and ambient heat. It was a goofy set of circumstances, but those damn ping pong balls can be explosive. By the way, so can latex surgical gloves...I actually saw that fire. Very odd, but ut happens.
