Betty Broderick Crime Scene Photos: Dan Broderick and Linda Kolkena, 1989
Early on November 5, 1989, Betty Broderick, 41, killed her ex-husband, 44-year-old San Diego attorney Daniel Broderick III, and his second wife, Linda Kolkena Broderick, 28, by shooting them while they slept in their Marston Hills neighbourhood home. Her first trial resulted in a hung jury. In December 1991, a second trial ended with convictions on two counts of second-degree murder and a sentence of 32 years to life. She was refused parole in 2010 and again in 2017, and died in custody aged 78 on May 8, 2026. The killings came after a prolonged, acrimonious divorce during which she lost custody and was repeatedly imprisoned for contempt. Her defence maintained that she had suffered psychological abuse and did not mean to kill; the court restricted that expert evidence, and the jury did not accept manslaughter.  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  · |
