If you use the buddy system always make sure at least one of you knows how to swim. If neither one knows how to swim it's a recipe for disaster.

As a small aside, women and children should try to use the buddy system as much as possible, even when traveling in areas where they usually feel safe - you never know when or where an assailant or other disaster may strike...okay, I'm done being a killjoy for the moment...
