best way to go around here is to smile at everyone you pass by, pat heads of kids on the streets but don't accept any offered free drinks or foods except on fiesta celebrations where there many people around you. but if you happen to walk by a group of few men drinking along the sidewalks, just smile at them and pass on. if they offer drinks, just decline and say our local police dont allow you to drink in public and might be jailed. they'd accept that more than if you say you dont drink at all.

and importantly, dont act too high and mighty. they already know that you are financially better than most since you can cross countries as tourists. just don't flaunt it else they'll get annoyed at you and you'll be in trouble. you don't have to act too mighty and strong because they already respects you and will respect you more if inspite of being financially superior, you still acknowledge and smile at them. that would get you anywhere around here safe and happy.

course im only speaking for luzon and visayas regions... mindanao is still a different world even amongst us locals. even to most of their fellow muslims, their traditional attitude is so @#$%^#!Q that those decent muslims moved out of mindanao already.
