Clearly the Baker knew his family inside was not the object of harm or threat. To hell if I would leave my family alone. I would shield them with my body until it was no longer good for bullet shielding having been shredded to bits with bullets, but I think you all get the point. He knew the piper was coming and it was time to pay him for the dance.
