I fellow I know from church is half Brazilian (on his mother's side - his father was a Greek sailor). He says that it is just like a lot of other countries in that if you know what areas to visit and what areas to avoid you will be okay.

I lived there for two years...lots of crime and violence as well as drug/alcohol abuse fuelling all that is bad about Brazil
