Autoerotic Death with Ether
Huntington Beach, California. A 62-year-old white male was found lying on his back in the center of his bed in the second-floor master suite; his legs were dangling off the side of the bed. The victim had a gag around his face, which was an AceTM bandage wrap and a green washcloth held in place with duct tape. This covered the lower part of his mouth and chin, with his nose exposed.  Fig.1 Body in the crime scene. The body of the victim was discovered lying on his bed in bondage. The victim was completely naked except for a black leather strap with two wrist shackles on his wrists. His hands were cuffed with silver handcuffs with AceTM bandages beneath the cuffs to prevent bruising. There was a plastic white zip tie connecting the black leather belt to the handcuffs. The key for the handcuffs was on the nightstand next to the victim.  Fig.2 The victim had a gag around his face, with an AceTM bandage wrap & a green washcloth soaked in ether held in place with duct tape. Bottle of ether recovered from crime scene. In the bathroom was a tan metal box containing dildos, leg restraints, hand restraints, lubricating jellies, and various other sexual devices. There was also a brown bottle containing a clear liquid, which examination revealed to be ether. It was apparent that the victim had bound himself and placed the gag over his mouth. All of the towels and bandages were wrapped neatly around his face and wrists. The duct tape had been cut with scissors and carefully placed around the towels to hold them in place over his face. Investigation revealed that the deceased would order Viagra and ether over the Internet and had become sexually obsessed with autoerotic activity. His wife was away on a trip when this event occurred. The death was properly classified as an accidental death.  Fig.3 Paraphernalia. Sex toys and assorted paraphernalia were recovered from the crime scene. Autoerotic death refers to the accidental death of individuals of either sex due to failure of devices, or unexpected effects of materials, that were being used to enhance the sexual experience. Although asphyxia from hanging has been described most frequently, a wide variety of other lethal situations have been reported. As there is great variability in the number and types of sexual aids that may be used by individuals, careful death scene examination is essential in helping to exclude suicide and more rarely homicide. The clandestine nature of this paraphilia may, however, make subsequent identification and diagnosis difficult unless the death scene features are typical.
