Toledo, Ohio, USA. A 64-year-old white male victim was found completely wrapped in duct tape from his head to his feet. At first, it was believed to be a homicide involving a black female because the deceased was wearing a black wig and dark-colored nylons. Due to the extensive duct tape, it was believed that someone must have taped the victim. However, a search of the victim’s apartment revealed that he had done this himself and apparently had done this many times before. In fact, one year earlier he was found outside his apartment tied up in ropes and tape seeking help. At that time, he told the responding officers that his friends had played a practical joke on him. Reconstruction of the event indicated the victim’s ritual. He would first dress in women’s clothing after putting a Tylenol bottle over his penis to catch the semen. He would then put on makeup.

He then wrapped ribbons and duct tape around his legs. Next, he wrapped his head leaving an opening for him to breathe through his nose. He also added a plastic bag over his head. He covered his hands with socks and duct tape. He then hopped to a doorway where he had rolls of duct tape on toilet paper holders, which were nailed into the door molding. Dozens of additional nail holes in the molding indicated habitual practice.

When he was ready to escape, he hopped over to another doorway and used the ball ends of the empty hinge plates (the door was missing) to break the tape until he was loose enough to escape. There was a large amount of duct tape residue on and around the ball ends of the hinge plates. Apparently, this time he panicked and managed to make his way to the hallway and fell down the stairs where he crawled a short distance before expiring. At autopsy, the medical examiner discovered the Tylenol bottle attached to his penis, and two nylon stockings were recovered from the victim’s mouth. The cause of death was ruled asphyxiation. The medical examiner ruled the manner of death accidental due to autoerotic asphyxiation.
