In September 1971, the Attica Prison uprising became the deadliest prison revolt in American history. About 1,300 prisoners at Attica Correctional Facility in New York took over the prison on September 9, holding 42 staff members hostage while demanding changes to conditions. State police and correction officers regained control in an armed assault on September 13. The death toll was 43, including 33 inmates and 10 hostages, with nearly all killed by law enforcement gunfire during the retaking. Officer William Quinn died from injuries sustained on the riot's first day, while other prisoners killed three inmates.
