Aseke Puapa New Guinea
Paupa New Guinea has long been known for its savagery, canniblism is still practiced by some there as well as other horrors. These are the smoked men of Aseke. Considered one of the strangest grave yards in the world

Interesting mummification process in what is a very decomposition-friendly environment... Body cut open, bamboo drainage poles inserted, smoked for a month, hematite clay smeared over the mummified body for preservation. Repair work using sap from certain local trees as glue. Quite an art. Charles Higginson "discovered" these tribes in 1907. He said of the Anga tribe: "bloodthirsty savages who greedily lapped up the entrails of their own kin during the smoking process". The drained bodily fluids/ entrails were put to use as a skin lotion, apparently. Probably a few other uses too, I imagine... |
