Aokigahara: Japan's Suicide Forest at the Foot of Mount Fuji
On Mount Fuji's northwest side in Japan, Aokigahara is a thick forest with a longstanding link to suicide. Authorities have counted scores of deaths in some years, but no longer release yearly totals in an effort to prevent copycat cases. The connection is frequently linked to Seicho Matsumoto's 1961 novel Nami no To, in which characters die in the forest, although suicides there occurred before the book.
