Aokigahara: Japan's Suicide Forest at the Foot of Mount Fuji
Aokigahara is a dense woodland on the northwest flank of Mount Fuji in Japan, long associated with suicide; authorities have recorded scores of deaths there in some years and stopped publishing annual figures to discourage imitation. The association is often traced to Seicho Matsumoto's 1961 novel Nami no To, whose characters die there, though deaths in the forest predate it.
