Aokigahara, Japan's Suicide Forest at the Base of Mount Fuji
Located in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, at the northwestern foot of Mount Fuji, Aokigahara is a 35 square kilometre woodland also known as Jukai, or the Sea of Trees, and is among the world's most frequently used suicide locations. The number of bodies recovered reached 105 in 2003. Officials subsequently stopped releasing yearly totals to prevent attracting additional people, while patrols and trailhead notices have encouraged visitors to get help since 2009. Hanging and drug overdose are the most frequent methods. Its link with suicide is commonly associated with Seicho Matsumoto's 1961 novel Tower of Waves, although suicides there occurred before the book. |
