Suicides happen frequently, but sometimes I go weeks at a time without finding any reports that include images. This past week has been very different, though, as I've found a great many, mostly in Thailand and Indonesia. Must be something in the weather.

This teen asked her parents for a glass of water and then went into her room with her laptop. When they hadn't heard from her in a while, the parents went in to check on her, as she'd recently broken up with a boyfriend and had been quiet and distant.

When they entered the room, they found her hanging in the connected bathroom, having tied her belt and school tie together to form a noose. Her mother told the reporter that the girl's mouth was wide open and her tongue was sticking out and she was not breathing, but was still warm. They called the police and tried to revive her.

Clearly, it was too late. She had written a suicide note, but any time there's an ex-boyfriend in the frame, the police tend to do a thorough investigation. In this case, they found the half-full glass of water she'd requested sitting on the sink next to an unopened package of rat poison. It seems she'd considered both options but decided to hang herself instead.

According to the police liaison for the newspaper, they investigated the scene and the girl's body thoroughly. He reported the following observations:

Her laptop was open and she'd sent a message to her ex-boyfriend, telling him goodbye.
There was a suicide note on the desk.
No signs of forced entry into the room nor external violence on the girl's corpse.
A fresh, prominent ligature mark from the belt was visible around her throat.
Her tongue was swollen and she'd bitten it while strangling, though there was no blood (only some saliva) noted on her shirt.
She'd emptied both her bowels and her bladder during the struggle and her pants were stained front and back, with the directionality of the waste matter indicating that it happened while hanging.

When these facts were presented to the family, they accepted the conclusion of suicide and had an immediate funeral rather than request a full autopsy. There are no images of her suspended, as the family cut her down before the police arrived. There are several photos of the scene, however (including one of the noose with much of her hair still caught in it), and of her body both at the scene and after being transported to the hospital for external examination.

What is with this censoring the faces in pictures from Thailand? That didn't occur in the past, at least not very often.

This was Indonesia, not Thailand. Indonesia typically gives very extensive scene documentation, but the photos are often censored to some degree or another.

Thailand typically only censors them once they're ID'd. If we can get the images before an ID is made, we can usually get them uncensored. But once they're identified, the source posters tend to censor them as a courtesy to the family.

It is estimated one million people a year die from suicide; that's one death every 40 seconds . The prediction is that this will increase to one every 20 seconds in the next 4 years according to the World Health organization .
This should make for loads and loads of new material .

Very sad. She would have had so many more boyfriends. I wish you could make young people understand that even though losing your first love hurts like hell it gets a lot better and you eventually meet someone a lot better.
