On the morning of Monday, October 5, 2015, Charles Frederick Harris, a 66-year-old American, died after jumping from the open-air Tonle Sap Bar on the twentieth floor of the Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel in Phnom Penh's Chroy Changvar district. He had checked into the hotel two days before. Police and United States Embassy staff searched his room and found a note apologising for any disruption his death could cause hotel guests, while security footage showed that he had gone alone to the bar. Harris had long lived as an expatriate in Phuket, Thailand, where he co-owned boat-charter firms operating surf charters in Indonesia. He was married and had two children who lived there with him. Friends and business associates later said he had long struggled with depression, though this was their account and not an official finding. Two details reported on the first day were later superseded: an initial Khmer-language report referred to an argument at the scene, and an early account said the fall was from the sixth floor, not the twentieth.

I feel bad for people who come across public suicide corpses like this. Traumatic, and not fun to clean up after. I know what it feels like to be in this poor souls position though, you can’t break what’s already broken. I hope he at least had himself a good time on vacation and did what he wanted to do and had some small token of happiness before throwing himself off the building. Mental health care in the US is for the rich and practically abysmal for everyone else.
