On September 16, 2007, Bill Hedden of Summerville, South Carolina, was attacked while snorkeling in Lake Moultrie near Moncks Corner. The alligator, which was nearly 12 feet long, severed his right arm at the shoulder. Hedden managed to reach a picnic area close by, where five nurses present by chance kept him alive until paramedics came. Wildlife officers later shot the animal and retrieved the arm from its stomach. Doctors concluded that reattachment was impossible. A circulated caption incorrectly connected the incident to a golf ball and a water hazard; the attack occurred while Hedden was snorkeling in the lake.

Great pics. I would have just left the ball in the hazard, golf balls are inexpensive and easily replaced, but one's life is priceless and irreplaceable.
