Alex Zanardi Crash Photos: 2001 Lausitzring CART Wreck That Took His Legs
On lap 142 of the CART race at EuroSpeedway Lausitz in Germany on September 15, 2001, Alex Zanardi lost control while leaving the pits and crossed the grass before spinning sideways into the racing line. Alex Tagliani's car then hit his cockpit at roughly 200 mph, ripping away the front section of the chassis and severing both of Zanardi's legs. After losing most of his blood volume, Zanardi's life was saved by rapid trackside treatment. He later returned to touring car racing using hand controls and won Paralympic gold medals in handcycling. |

Re: Alex Zanardi Crash Photos: 2001 Lausitzring CART Wreck That Took His Legs
OK, so from the Wiki article about Alex Zanardi it says this crash amputated both of his legs at the knees. From the pic I would have guessed the flying meat was guts and not legs! I was amazed to see this wreck didn't kill him. He's very lucky.
