Re: Accidental Drowning. Prolonged Submerged Body Found
Bodies can last for up to 100 years.....There is a steamer that was lost in the 1890's in Lake Superior during a storm. It was finally rediscovered in the 1970's, and the chief engineer was still at his post in the engine room. They contacted his family and the family decided that since he had died at his post, he may as well stay there. His eyes are gone, too, but the rest of him is still there. Even his hands and skin. You can tell he's dead, but his clothes are still on him, and they are in good condition. Hair and skin is present and complete. I have never dived on that wreck, but I would like to some day. Usually the dive masters keep and eye on everyone so no one messes with the body. People just visit him and it's become kind of tradition to drop in on him when divers visit the wreck. I have seen both video and still pictures of him. He just sits there.........hope his death was fast, although knowing the cold water in Lake Superior, it probably was over in a minute or less. One REALLY gross one I heard about is one of the divers that was lost on the "Mystery U-Boat" off New York. One of the divers had a problem and died while diving. His body, still in it's drysuit, was found several months later. That had to have been a pretty ghastly find. Dry suits seal very well. You rarely even get your insulation damp at the wrists or neck. So after stewing in the rubber suit for 7 months, it must have been like a container of rotten jelly |
