Its quite common for a body that has been in a wet environment to be very well preserved, as Kelly said, this is adipocere. Adipocere is where the fat in the body undergoes a chemical change and solidifies to form a waxy substance (is known as "grave wax"or "grave soap"). This usually happens in the presence of water. Wet graves often have a lot of adipocere when exhumed. It's quite remarkable how some bodies look even 100 years after burial, due to the formation of adipocere. There are some interesting sites if you google it. This is the most amazing pic Ive ever seen of a body turned to adipocere....this girl has been buried 90 years: |
