Re: Abortion Due To Deformity
NICU RN here. "Organ dissection showed a small cerebellum with neuroglial heterotopias, a cardiac defect (patent foramen ovale), intestinal malrotation, hypoplastic kidneys, accessory spleen..." These issues plus the symmetrical growth restriction (& the syndrome in general) would have made for a VERY poor outcome for this baby. I doubt she would have survived. The perinatal genetic counselling people do not take these cases lightly. This baby would have been past the legal abortion gestation and there must have been a damn poor predicted outcome for them to advise termination. Think of the alternative: having the child suffer for weeks/months being intubated, poked for multiple tests and lines, experiencing painful procedures and struggling to survive in the NICU. In my opinion that is cruel punishment for these "minor deformities" that are most likely incompatible with life. |

Damn, I'm sorry lady--I forgot that you were an expert on what happens after death. You are dead, correct? Speaking from first-hand experience? Well, I would much rather believe and be wrong than to not believe and be wrong. But thanks for the reply anyway. Oh and by the way? Fuck Off. |

Re: Abortion Due To Deformity
I am shocked by some of the comments on this thread. So many of you have passed judgement on this mother without knowing anything about this case. FYI, past 20 weeks it's virtually impossible to get an abortion unless there is strong medical justification. The hospital bioethics committee was likely consulted as well. The fact that the pregnancy was this far along suggests that this child was wanted, and this was probably a devastating diagnosis for the parent(s). This language is completely uncalled for. Words like "slut" and "cunt" do not belong in an ethical debate (unless you want to sound like a hysterical right-wing lunatic. See Rush Limbaugh.) When I object to something I try and at least form a cogent argument to back up my position. Interesting that none of you so far have questioned the father's role in the decision - as always, the woman gets all the blame. |

Re: Abortion Due To Deformity
the father doesn't get a role in the decision. he isn't the one that aborts the fetus, and honestly no decent woman would ever abort what she might consider to be a baby, just because a guy tells her to. in the end the decision is always hers.
