Piranhas will attack anything that moves in the water. Living or dead. Look up the youtube video of piranhas attacking a baby bird the moment it falls from the nest.

I don't think she drowned first. If she had drowned, she'd have been in the water entirely, and the piranhas would have eaten all of her, and not just her legs.

That's a myth, largely perpetuated by the movie "Piranha" made in 1978. Piranhas usually don't attack anything that large, especially if it is moving unless they have been deprived of food for a great length of time. Even the natives in Brazil often swim in the water with piranhas with no issue. There are much more dangerous things in the water in Brazil than piranhas to worry about, such as Caimans, Anacondas, and Electric Eels.
