54 Migrant Workers From Myanmar Suffocate in Ranong, Thailand, April 9, 2008
Fifty-four migrant workers from Myanmar suffocated inside an airtight refrigerated seafood container on a 10-wheel truck in Ranong province, southern Thailand, on the night of April 9, 2008. They had crossed from Myanmar by fishing boat and were being transported overland toward Phuket. The driver did not switch on the container's air conditioning during the roughly 90-minute trip. The driver stopped the truck and fled, and survivors flagged down police. He was later arrested, confessed and was sentenced. Four other people were convicted in December 2012.
