How I read this is: He wanted to commit suicide, but he couldn't bare the thought of her moving on and being with someone else, so he waited until the kids were away and carried out the murder-suicide.

They celebrated his b'day the day before so maybe the alcohol triggered the depression again in such a way he decided to end it for all involved.

Maybe she threatened to leave him. She may have just finished putting on her shoes in that corner of the house. Didnt look like there was any struggle. She was just turning around from that corner when the husband shot her in the eye completely by surprise. Realizing what he did, thought would be best to end his life by putting one in his ear. Looks like it was all spur of the moment.
